I think I had to come to work today to get some rest!
Last weekend, my parents and I picked apples and pears in my Aunt and Uncle's orchard.  We delivered them to my house where they are taking up a large chunk of my dining room.  There were four boxes and three buckets of apples, a bag of asian pears, and 3 large boxes of pears (2 bartlets and 1 Anjou).

As you can perhaps tell from the pears on the table, the bartlets were overripe and needed to be processed as soon as possible.  Well, that didn't become possible until this Saturday.  In addition I had three weeks worth of green beans in the refrigerator that needed to be processed before they spoiled.

I decided to blanch and freeze the beans and to make one batch of pear salsa.  If I got to more pears, I would just peal slice and bag them.  Of course, making pear salsa requires a few other ingredients.

I started with the beans

They went fairly quickly (only 2 episodes of NCIS).  I got six quart bags full to put into the freezer.

Then I moved on to the pear salsa.  All of the pears on the table went into the pot, plus 12 jalepenos, 3 green peppers, 3 red peppers, 6 onions, mustard seed, and sugar.  (it calls for 20 large pears but I had so much trimming to do that I have no idea what was equivalent to 20 pears).

While it simmered I worked on the pears in the bin and put them into gallon ziplocks.  I think I got 2.  Finally, I canned the salsa and got 15 pints.

That's was Saturday from 11:00-11:00.

Sunday, I picked up Marian after lunch.  After running a few errands, we started working on the wheelborrow of Anjou pears.  We just pealed, sliced, and bagged them.  I lost track of how many bags we did- maybe 6 or 7 gallon ziplocks and a quart ziplock?  Everuthing went into the freezer with the many many bags and jars of fruit and vegetables for Midwinter's feast.  I don't think we'll need all the pears so they'll go back into the personal larder but they are there for now.  Marian's freezer is stuffed to capacity and I'm working on mine.

Everything on the right hand side of the freezer is designated for Midwinter's unless not needed. The green spot on top is chopped leeks that we also processed.  Underneath are all manner of juices from fruit, and peaches, blackberries, elderberries, and more.  We started about 4:00 and I got Marian home a little after 8:30.

Long, work-filled days and I feel like I never really had a weekend.
