I'm done for the day.

The entire morning was devoted to errands. I left the apartment about 9:30 and got back to the house at about 12:30. The goal was to find flooring, look for furniture, buy the cats' supplies (so I don't get scolded in the morning), and buy yet more paint but return dropcloths (the paint went right through them onto the floor- kinda defeats the purpose). I also bought a new motion sensor light for the back porch, a tube of caulk to seal the bath suround, and I found a great second hand table- no chairs but a table. It is a 42" round oak table with claw feet, decorative scroll work, and a leaf. It was exactly what I was looking for and although it had chairs, they seemed a little over priced. I may be wrong, but I opted to buy the table for $125 instead of the table and 6 chairs for $397. I don't have room for 6 chairs anyway. I'll post pictures later- I had to take them on Mom's camera so I'm waiting for them to be posted.

I arrived at the house to find the roofers on the roof tearing it off and desperately trying to get new tar paper back on before it rained. They kept at it, in spite of the rain but I sure hope, for their sake, it holds off a little so they don't have to be so cold and wet (it's a family- a father, two daughters, and a son). I signed the contract for the roof and the structural repairs of the back porch roof. I want to replace the roofing on the porch since it leaks like a seive but with the corrugated roofing costing $22/sheet and 15-20 sheets necessary plus additional supplies, it's going to add $1100 to the bill (it is a 40 foot deck). I might be able to do it but I don't want to commit to it until I've purchased the flooring and the other necessities.

I did decide on a flooring- I'm going with the Pergo XP in Asheville Hickory; It's a 10 mm. I've looked and looked and looked and read tons of reviews. The other brands available in my area get lousy reviews, are way out of my price range, or are only sold by people who require that they install them. The Pergo has some mixed reviews but 3/4 are good. I think, because people self install, that there is some human error that leads to dissatisfaction in many cases. It costs about $2.79/ sq ft and since the padding is attached I don't have to purchase that in addition. Everything else affordable and local is a 7 mm and that doesn't seem nearly as stable. Another factor I considered is that my mother has been very happy with the Pergo in her sewing room and it has no apparent wear after many years.

Once I got to the house, I did a lot of fumbling around waiting for dad because I needed to go pick up my table (it did not fit in my car) and he'd gotten started tearing out the closet doors and rails in the bedroom (a task that took twice as long as expected). Mom finished the second coat of paint in the kitchen and dining room. When we got back from picking up the table, I put two coats of paint on the walls and ceiling in the linen closet (it's a walk-in with lots of nooks and cranneys one of which is slightly narrower than I am). It took almost an hour to remove the TV mount from the bedroom; it's crazy the things that take so much time. I pulled the masking tape from the kitchen and dining room and reinstalled the cover plates. It needs some touch up but nothing too bad.

Mom decided to go ahead and knock down the popcorn ceiling in the bedroom- We made her stop until she at least had a mask. Nothing to say it has asbestos in it but nothing to say it doesn't either. The ceiling was filthy and when she tried to vacuum it she made skid marks in it- so this seemed more logical (I hate the stuff anyway- but I don't want it to be a big health hazard either). She's knocking it down onto the carpet that has to be removed and we'll take it all out together. I'm sure there are a lot of issues with this but it's what we can afford to do.

Carrie brought us dinner about 7:00 and we pulled all the stepladders around the table and used them as chairs. It was funny and sweet. I sure appreciated the yummy lasagna and I know my parents did too. Unfortunately, Carrie and Jenna couldn't stay and eat with us but it was very sweet of them to come all the way out to Junction City from Springfield just to bring us dinner. We lost momentum after that and I feel like I got so little accomplished but I guess it's little steps one after another that gets us to the finsh line.
