The blackberry brambles took me out- all the scratches and pricks elicited an immune reaction which caused my whole body to ache for several days. I picked about 4 gallons worth of berries (used gallon ice cream tubs, hence the measurement). One gallon stayed with mom and I got the other three (not really fair but it's what Mom requested)

That was Sunday, they sat in a cooler until Tuesday when we could can them. Only one berry seemed the worse for wear. I was struggling to figure out what to do with them since I don't generally eat jam or jelly. We decided to can the berries in a light syrup and to make, and can, a little pie filling.

We took pictures of blackberries...only after the fact.

I believe in the end I had 10 pint jars of berries and five pints of pie filling.

You may recall that I elected not to peel the peaches and I probably would peel them next time because the peels simply slip off when you eat them.

Part of them were canned in light syrup but the rest we canned in a dark syrup made of dark brown sugar, rum flavoring, and a spice mixture- essentially the same that Marian used in her peach pickles but I did not add the vinegar.

The spiced peaches are now aging. I'll have to let you know how they turn out in a few weeks.
