Unkind words...
Aug. 17th, 2015 10:52 amI love my dad but he admits that he can be really critical of other people. He isn't usually deliberately unkind to us but sometimes things he says can be extrapolated in ways he hasn't thought about. I called him out on it yesterday but I don't think it will make any difference.
He was telling a story about a bad customer service experience on Saturday. He went to talk to the dealership where he has purchased a utility trailer, but the only person there couldn't tell him anything about the concerns he had with the configuration of the trailer. Dad explained it by saying the man was fat. Like fat is a synonym for lazy, incompetent, incapable, irresponsible, stupid, etc. I reminded him that I am also FAT and that I take those kind of remarks personally. He excused it by saying this man was so large that he couldn't move and was very slow but I'm not that way. *sigh* Does he think that really matters?
Thursday the Dean had something equally stupid to say. He wanted the demographics of the people we interviewed from a pool (after the hiring was completed). He's trying to show that we were attracting and interviewing diverse applicants. I can't give him that information because it's separated from the person's files to maintain the confidentiality. I told him this and he responded with: "These are the people we saw face to face. I think I have it." Seriously, you can just tell by looking at someone what their ethnicity is? Or did you ask them? Both of these are seriously not okay with Equity and Inclusion. When I posted a general post about it on Facebook, one of my former co-workers said that another had had him say something very similar to her and she was willing to make a statement if I went to Equity and Inclusion. However, given the tenuous state of my employment, I can't take this to Equity and Inclusion for fear of retribution. If I get a job, I will send it on before leaving. But this is a serious load of horse manure!
