Saturday's work...
Mar. 26th, 2014 11:22 amI dug out the grass around the stump and then spent about a half an hour with a mattock chopping the wood out and removing surface roots. I had to be very careful with the baby tree roots as I dug up the grass and the old roots since they wanted to follow the rotting tree roots. All told the project took about three hours but it was hard work. I am pleased with the results, though.

I need to put an edging strip in and then add some soil before planting some flowers. I need to wait to add the flowers anyway. I think I'll be planting some impatients, Sweet William, and nasturtiums. There may be others too as it's easy to find extras at the nursery. It is easier to mow around this nice bed than around the stump and tree. I think there are more flower beds coming in the future around the three other trees, as long as I can expend that kind of energy.
For fun, I estimated with SparkPeople how many calories I expended:
30 minutes chopping wood= 349
150 minutes of gardening= 903
15 minutes of lawn mowing= 131
PLUS
54 minutes of Zumba = 629 (Although the Wii indicates over 1000).
Total= 2012 calories burned
There was some additional work done when Mom and Dad came with the trailer to pick up the yard waste for recycling. The piles of broken limbs and garden vines is now gone. However, I must admit that immediately following finishing the lawn mowing, I went and sat in the hot tub. And there wasn't much else done that was productive for the rest of the day.
