Yep....It's canning season.
Sep. 8th, 2012 06:08 pmLast Sunday we picked and sliced several five-gallon buckets of apples. The four one-gallon bags of apple slices dried down into a one-gallon Ziplock and a quart. Two hours work just to clean and slice them--it's a little discouraging but they are so much more tasty than the store bought variety.
I managed to process 27 lbs of peaches and marinated them in spiced, rum flavored dark syrup Thursday and Friday, now they are on the dehydrator. I lost a few because I didn't get them processed earlier. Making an offer on the house had priority over canning on Tuesday last week. ;>)
I picked two 5 gallon buckets of plums from the neighbor's trees today. Some will need to ripen a while; others need to be processed, along with the box of asian pears, this week. I need to also pick the elderberries before the birds eat them all.
Now I need to go wash the tree grime off of my body so I can go to dinner. Picking plums was not on my to-do list today but I wasn't sure when else I would get it done. Hmmm...I wonder what else I left undone in order to do it. Nothing earth shattering, I'm sure. The house is back into reasonable order, although there is always room for improvement. Floors have been vacuumed and mopped, bedding has been changed. Dishes have been run, although they do need put away. Really, it's been fairly productive today, in spite of the funeral at 2:00 today.
