Overdue post...
Jun. 1st, 2012 09:51 pmAmazingly, I finished all the sewing I intended to do before...or well really AT Egils. The purple silk tunic looked amazing over the citron tunic with the striped silk pants. I don't have any pictures of myself though.
Egils was a lot of work this year...as expected. I came onsite at about 11:00 on Thursday and set up my tent in the pouring down rain. Then I went to gate at 1:00 to check in merchants, in the pouring rain. Unfortunately, the gate pavillion leaked... profusely... there were no dry spots in the entire tent. Yesult and I were soaked to the skin, our paperwork was soaked, it was miserable. We weren't much into joking but I said we were going to turn in two inches of tree pulp instead of paperwork. Yuck! We called it a day at 10:00.
It poured all night long. We opened gate at 10:00 am under a pop up. It was rather cramped quarters but better than wet. It rained off and on all day. Gate was open until midnight but because Ceridwen and I agreed that I would open gate at 8 on Saturday I called it a day at 10:00 pm. I never left gate except to go to the biffie. Fortunately, our kitchen brought us food at meal times (more or less- lunch was at 3:00) and workers treats left us with lots of goodies. I also had my own personal runner which made it possible for me to stay at gate (thank you, Robert!) It rained again in the night but at least part of the day was fairly sunny. It was a long day but I love working with Ceridwen and the good company made it fun.
Saturday, I opened gate at 8 am. At 2:00ish Ceridwen sent me away for a break and I got my first look at the meadow and merchant's row. I was disappointed to find that Gypsy Caravan didn't have any silk or anything else I was much interested in. Nothing else on the row really caught my eye. So I went back to camp, ate lunch and then headed back to gate to relieve Ceridwen so she could get the boys off towards home. I came back about 3:30 because their ride was supposed to arrive at 4:00. They were a bit late but it was ok, we sat and visited while checking people in.
While we were waiting a neighbor came in with girlfriends/family. Between the three ladies there were 11 children. My quote for the weekend arrived while they were filling out the minor waivers. One woman said "How many children do I have with me...." she looked around "1...2....3....4..5...6." she looked confused and tried again, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6... Did I really leave three kids at home with your dad?" Oofta...9 kids.
I think we closed gate a little early and then Ceridwen and I spent the evening enjoying each other's company. I headed to bed about 11:00. Ceridwen and I had agreed that she would run gate from 8-12 on Sunday so I could go to church if I wanted to. I didn't make it off site on Sunday but I got some nice quiet time to study and pray.
I spent a while at gate on Sunday to close everything out with Yesult and Ceridwen. Amazingly, our gate counts matched our deposits and we ended up $5 ahead due to a donation. We very carefully matched each gate sheet with the cash that came in as they were turned in. And we checked out the gate sheets one at a time to a specific individual along with $25 in cash for change. It worked amazingly well except when there were only two of us and we needed to reconcile a sheet. We didn't get many volunteers but part of that was because gate volunteers who handle money have to be paid members and appoved by the exchequer as her deputies. We didn't actually turn anyone away but the one volunteer who was not part of Sith Baile Mor (the village we belong to that took on running the event) got scared away by a complicated transaction. Usually it was Ceridwen, myself, Robert as my runner, and Donovan. Mostly Ceridwen and I handled the money and the gentlemen helped us sort out the site token strings (darn snarly pieces of ....string), site booklets, and direct traffic. Forest and several others helped off and on through the weekend.
With Gate finally closed, Ceridwen and I were free to enjoy the rest of the event. She gave me a beautiful pink shawl that she'd knit. One of the conversations we'd had at gate was about rectangular construction- she said she wanted to try it out but it would have to wait until she could afford more linen. So I picked up a few yards of linen for her and included rectangular construction lessons. I need to block the shawl- she didn't have enough room. She needs to wash the linen and then we'll do the lessons. Yesult gave us a bottle of Aethelbrose (?). I don't usually drink but it was sweet and very mild so Ceridwen and I shared the bottle before she went off to party.
Monday was about tear down. I pulled down the canvas before the threatened rain arrived and then helped pull down the pavillions on the meadow. I headed home around 1:00. There was still a lot to do but most of it was lifting and carrying which I can't really do. As I was leaving, I noticed that we'd missed the gate pavillion. I stopped to see if I could pull it down by myself but there was still a lot of gate stuff stored in it under black plastic. So I left it, knowing someone would take care of it (but yes I felt a little guilty).
I dropped my camping gear at my parents- it was a little frustrating because apparently my parent had taken the only keys to the shed with them to CA. So I dumped it all in the shop and dad will have to put it away when they return. My house was rather trashed from all the last minute projects but fortunately, I'd had the foresite to take Tuesday off too and was able to restore my house to the usual organized clutter.
Even so, going back to work on Wednesday was tough!
