Wii. and maybe life beyond the Wii..
Mar. 1st, 2012 08:48 pmI'm sure you are tired of hearing it and well...it doesn't serve any real purpose but 39 minutes yesterday, 60 minutes today. 196 calories burned yesterday, 281 calories burned today. Haven't been able to get to water aerobics yet this week but hopefully tomorrow.
Yesterday I had to get in a little boxing and kung fu on the Wii to get rid of some of my frustration with the technology. Admittedly the new video conferencing equipment was just installed and hasn't been tested But you'd think SOMETHING would work correctly. That wasn't my experience yesterday. The second floor technology reset to factory specs after we used it on Tuesday and had to be totally reconfigured. (Tuesday was not without trial since they neglected to order the telecom equipment and just have the video.) The first floor technology had a short somewhere and the video cords are so large and heavy that they were damaging the ports on the brand new mac laptops. *sigh* We'll get the glitches all worked out someday. It didn't help that both times the need was urgent. The first floor was a student doing a defense and she was bitchy and negative about everything "It stinks in here. Why can't anything work. I should have gone somewhere else. You can't get anything right in this building." I had to leave to avoid saying something nasty. I know she was stressed out but I guess people's truest nature comes out under stress/duress. Anyway, I wasn't impressed.
Today was a huge furniture delivery. We're closing in on the last of it. Unfortunately, the installers got all the large stuff in and then started trying to assemble the tables, only to discover that there were no screws included. So they loaded the tables back up on a pallet to take back to the warehouse where someone will assemble them and they will bring them back out already assembled sometime next week. All the lovely burnt orange and brown arm chairs arrived. I'm so thrilled. *rolling eyes* I still haven't figured out how I'm supposed to get cleaning instructions for the furniture. Every thing has special stain resistant coatings but no instructions.
I'm also having issues with staffing. I've got one person who just had CT surgery and can't use her dominant hand. Additionally, she is only working 4 hours a day. Unfortunately, this is the heaviest time of year for applications and acceptances and that's what she processes. I don't know if it's just because of her hand or if she's not going to be able to handle the load. Today I printed a list of all the applicants for her complete with the status. Hopefully that will help her.
Another person is under disciplinary action because she seems to be incablable of doing the job for which she was hired. She should have never made it past the 6 month review but her supervisor at the time wasn't paying any attention and let it go by.
Another one has a limited cognative capacity. She's not dumb but she just doesn't have higher level thinking skills so she is easily flustered and confused. Complex processes and problem solving are not within her repetoire. Unfortunately, I really could use these skills in her because she has time to do some things that we need help with but that need that level of thinking.
My students are not to be trusted right now. Two called in sick today so we had no coverage at all this morning but that happens this time of year. However, their data entry skills are not consistant and our data isn't either because of it. So I'm going to likely have to lay off some of them and hire a part time staff member to data entry.
My new hire is working out really well but everyone keeps giving her stuff they don't have time to do and eventually she's going to have to do her own duties. She hasn't learned them all yet but we're slowly getting her up to speed. She's been helping with the transfer of files from one system to another and she's entering the old SMED files that weren't ever in our system. The schedule of classes will become part of her responsibility as soon as it arrives this week.
I just don't have enough people who are able to do the tasks that need done. Unfortunately, unless I can find a magical pot of money, I won't be able to hire anyone. Only tenure track and instructors are being hired. Today one of the SMED folks said we needed someone who could enter all of the grant proposal information into the system (you know, submit the grant for her)....I told her we didn't have the personnel for faculty services. She was irritated but that's the way it is.
I went and had sushi for dinner but I'm having a mild reaction everytime I eat sushi recently and I haven't been able to pinpoint the cause. I thought maybe it was the roe but I didn't have any this time and I still reacted. Bah! Not being able to eat sushi would suck!
Now I need to pay my bills and write my birthday cards for the month.
