Canning...the after midnight round up
Oct. 5th, 2011 12:14 amCanning took a while but I made the tactical error of stopping to drop off the pickers tax at Mom and Dad's and I never get out of there quickly. So this is coming to you after midnight while I wind my body down for sleep. 5:30 is going to come way too early.
I took the direct route to Marian's today and had the pickles on the stove by 7:00. The relish now looks like this:
And this:

I actually did this, start to finish on my own. That's a first! Obviously I had moral support but I did my own work! While I worked on the relish, Marian and Trudi started peeling and coring the mountain of pears. We got about two boxes done but still have a little more than two more to go. I have a crockpot full of pears simmering to make pear butter:

I also have about a dozen pints of spiced pears:

We ran out of syrup with just three jars to go so we heated up the left over spiced rum syrup and used it instead:

Marian and I will have to get together on Saturday because there are still pears, plums, and a whole lot of apples to process.
I'm not complaining but my pantry is getting kind of full:

We still have all the fruit to do yet and I want to make tomato sauce. Hmm...it could get a bit crowded here.
