Good and bad...
Jan. 20th, 2010 03:55 pmI have received seven emails from our friends in Haiti this week and last. All are safe and getting the care they need. Food is hard to come by and diesel is selling for about $14 US/gallon on the black market, if you can find the right person. There are no stores open so all food and wares are being sold on the street and there is no real system to know how to find what you need. Customs and immigrations offices are non-existent; planes land and deboard with no official records. Aid is difficult to get to, and difficult to get through. As I understand it, the roads aren't built for the kind of traffic that they are seeing now and the trucks with aid are having difficulty getting through to the people who need it. However, help is getting through, more daily. The after shock yesterday did more damage to buildings. But the damage is not universal; totally destroyed buildings stand side by side with buildings in, more or less, perfect condition. We are thankful for the miracle that kept all our friends safe through the disaster. I know everyone is praying (who believes in such) for all the survivors now.
