hlmauera: (knitting)
Christmas is coming (and a few birthdays too). I know, I know, it's still late summer and most people don't want to think about winter yet. However, if I'm to get Christmas presents made, I have to start working now. So...I've set aside the lace for me for a bit and I'm thinking about things for others.

I don't think everyone is tired of socks yet. I'm thinking about lace for some of the ladies in my life but I don't know how long it will take me and socks I usually have a good feel for. Maybe boring I don't know, there is an seemingly infinite variety of patterns and colors. We'll see how it goes.

I belong to several communities on Ravelry and the Sock Knitters Anonymous has a September mystery sock. I've cast that on because it's pretty and it's a whole lot of new techniques...toe up construction (Turkish cast-on is fantastic), magic loop, lace patterned socks. To count for the drawing, it has to be orange. Which is fine for this time of year. Besides my soon to be SIL really likes orange. I've also cast on a shrug for her (Called a Hug) in orange, navy and tan. We'll see what I think of it when it's finished. The back is very abbreviated and I don't know if I'll like it that way and if I can add enough ribbing to make it look more like a garment to me.

For mom I'm planning to cast-on the Nine to Five socks in a dusty teal color and the Falling in Love Socks in an interesting dusty rose/lilac color. The Nine to Five socks are one of the September knit-a-long socks for the Thrifty knitter sock club group on Ravelry. I don't know if I can get two pairs done in September but it's worth a try. I also like the Sweet alyssum shawl, the Swallowtail shawl, and many other shawl patterns. I'd love to make one for Mom. I also have a 3/4 finished cross stitch project for mom.

For my brother I'm thinking a pair of Sarah's slip stitch socks out of Knit Picks Felici in either atmosphere or coastal. I have to come up with another idea too because his birthday is in December also. Maybe the Manly socks.

Dad's been complaining that he didn't get any socks so I guess I must knit him up a pair. Problem is I need to get his measurements and he's been stubbornly opposed to the idea since last year. ("You have things to do for other people...") Dad also wore the hat I made him last year to death so I should make him another.

I thought about knitting this lace stole for my niece but it's hard to put that much work into something that I'll never know is even received let alone appreciated.

I have no ideas for the nephew.

Sister and BIL get nothing. If they can't even acknowledge that they receive gifts I'm not wasting my time. I spend weeks wondering if it's lost in the mail and finally make a call to find out, to get a nonchalant "yeah we got it." The kids I can kind of excuse... they're kids. My sister and BIL are not. One year, I could deal with it but it's been every year for 10 years now.

My grandmothers are gone so there are no special projects. Grandpa doesn't like handmade objects...don't know why, just doesn't. I think he threw away the silk hat I knit for him.

That pretty much takes care of the family. I need to check to see if anyone in the extended family wants crocheted-top towels this year. I know my brother and S-T-B SIL want them but Tami wants to pick out the towels. As much as I would like to make presents for all of my friends, I can't; I accepted that years ago. I don't have time or money to try. But that means I have lots of friends and that's a lovely thing. I will probably try to make something for Jay, Candy, and Lukas (Yes, I know I don't have to, Candy). I asked Candy to make duct-tape casts of the adult feet so I could do some socks for them. They also have b-days in Sept. but I haven't got time to get anything to them before their birthdays. It will likely be a combined present. I think I will try to help them with 12th night garb as part of the Christmas gift.

Ah, 12th night. I need to think about clothes for that too. It needs to be in February, truly it does. Otherwise I don't have time to do all my christmas presents and my garb.
