Mixed days
Jun. 22nd, 2006 09:01 amI was feeling pretty good yesterday when our cute little 22 year old student worker thought I was going to be about 25 on my birthday. And the Barony serenaded me very nicely at practice.
Unfortunately, I discovered an inch and a half of water on the floor of my parents' garage when I stopped by to take care of the plants. Nothing appears to be leaking, though. As near as I can tell, when the neighbor watered the lawn, he set the sprinkler so that it flooded under the door. It was a mess. Of course many of Dad's school books as well as several boxes of grandpa and grandma's stuff were on the floor in cardboard boxes. I don't know how much they will be able to salvage. Looks like it's going to be time to clean out the garage again. I put the books out on the back patio to see if they could dry out enough to be usable. I squeegeed and vacuumed then went to practice. When I returned after practice and dinner, the floor was dry except where the boxes were holding the water. I just couldn't lift all the boxes so there is still a full row across the garage with the bottom 2 boxes wicking water. Hopefully they will dry out a bit now that they aren't sitting in water. I'll have to go back tonight and see how the books are doing.
E. isn't at work today. Her grandmother took a bad turn last night and they are just waiting for her to stop breathing. Her grandfather is frail and dying from cancer also and they are concerned about how he will take the news. It's a big blow to her. She was very close to her grandmother. She told me when she called "She wasn't supposed to go first; we haven't prepared at all." Sometimes life doesn't give us time to prepare. We all hurt for her but, aside from just being there when she needs us, there isn't much we can do. Yesterday we celebrated life, today we await death. Life is always throwing curve balls.
We are actually fairly understaffed today. We are missing one administrator and 3 office personnel. It's a good thing it's inter-session week and it's very quiet. Good thing our student worker is here too. But that means I shouldn't linger over this today. Back to work!
